Thermochemical data, e.g., enthalpies of solution and enthalpies of formation, offer insight into the stability of a variety of solid phases that are important from both waste storage and remediation perspectives. Due to the high variability of these materials, novel insights can be gained using separate calorimetric approaches. Two strategies will be described: room temperature solution calorimetry and high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. To highlight the utility of these two strategies, data for two sets of interesting compounds will be presented, namely uranyl peroxides (including clusters) and aluminum-centered Keggin clusters (e-Al13). The role that uranyl peroxide phases play in the corrosion of spent fuel will be discussed. In addition, the potential contribution of e-Al13 Keggin clusters in waste sludges, as well as their effect on radionuclide transport, will be detailed.
