High-speed microwave synthesis has attracted a considerable amount of attention in recent years. Since the first reports on the use of microwave heating to accelerate organic chemical transformations by the groups of Gedye and Giguere/Majetich in 1986 and the subsequent work by Bose, more than 6000 articles have been published in this field. This lecture will highlight the developments in this field during the past 25 years including applications in organic/medicinal chemistry, peptide synthesis, nanomaterials research, combinatorial chemistry and the question of scale-up of microwave-assisted reactions to production scale.
