A non-radiative decay mechanism involving hydrogen-bonding was established according to observed fluorescence yield (Ff), cis-trans isomerization yield (FZE), transient infrared absorption, and visible fluorescence decay dynamics of p-ABDI and m-ABDI in protic (CH3OH and CD3OD) and aprotic (CD3CN) solvents. For p-ABDI, the fluorescence lifetimes (<1 ps) are nearly independent of solvents, but the ground-state recovery rate probed with transient IR absorption, decreases from 18.3 ps to 7.3 ps when CH3OH replaces CD3CN. The fluorescence lifetime (~ 10 ns) of m-ABDI in CD3CN is similar to the ground-state recovery rate, but decreases to ~4 ps and ~75 ps in CH3OH. A short-lived IR band near 1613 cm�1 appeared immediately upon excitation at 400 nm, followed by a decay with a time constant of ~14.8 ps. A band ~1594 cm�1 rises with ~12 ps and subsequently decays with a time constant ~ 62 ps.
