POCN ligands are a class of pincer ligand that coordinate to metals through a direct metal-carbon bond, as well as through a phosphinite and an amine.  Nickel complexes of POCN ligands, such as (3-((Morpholino)methyl)phosphinitobenzene), have been studied for possible applications in organic catalysis (e.g., Kharasch addition reactions).  Despite their potential practical utility, surprisingly little is known about the electronic structures of these systems.  Toward the goal of understanding the electronic properties POCN group 10 metal complexes and modulating their photochemistry, we have prepared a series of these complexes.  Comparison of the absorption and emission spectra of the nickel and platinum POCN complexes gives insight into the origin of luminescence from these samples.  Also reported is a new method for metalation of platinum-containing POCN complexes using a platinum(II) precursor.  This differs from the oxidative addition chemistry used in synthesis of the only other reported terdentate, mixed-donor platinum pincer complex.
