During the past years the structure of vanadia thin films supported on TiO2 rutile (110) and their reactivity towards alcohols oxidation have been extensively studied. In particular, the monolayer V2O5 catalyst has demonstrated to be the most active. The main reaction products are aldehydes, thus the reaction proceeds through dehydrogenation. In this paper we introduce a completely new set of data collected on vanadia nanoclusters grown on TiO2 (110), where the V oxidation state is close to +3. Combining surface science techniques (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction performed with synchrotron radiation, thermal programmed desorption and scanning tunnelling microscopy) and DFT calculations, we will describe the nanoclusters electronic properties and their structure. Moreover we will demonstrate that they grow aligned on the substrate and that such a catalyst is active towards methanol total oxidation reaction. Hence a change in the V oxidation state leads to a partial modification of the selectivity.
