Recently, cycloparaphenylenes have emerged as interesting nanostructures that have attracted the attention of chemists. Unique size-dependent properties and carbon nanotube-like architectures that have the potential to seed nanotube growth render them promising materials.  Theory predicts that as cycloparaphenylenes become smaller, they will begin to exhibit quinoidal character as aromaticity is lost. We have recently synthesized strained [7]CPP and [6]CPP, both of which exhibit benzenoid character. Therefore, the synthesis of [5]CPP will allow for the structural analysis of a smaller cycloparaphenylene.
