Hydrogen production from reforming of oxygenated liquids such as ethanol, dimethyl ether, and acetaldehyde continues to attract attention.  Behind this increased interest in using these oxygenated liquids as a hydrogen source is the potential for deriving them from plant matter. Fuels that can be obtained from biological sources have the advantage of offering a theoretically closed carbon loop since the CO2 produced during reforming would be sequestered via photosynthesis during plant growth.  Previous work in our labs focused on supported cobalt catalysts and investigated the role of synthesis parameters[1-3], support effects[4, 5], as well as the reaction networks and mechanisms[6, 7].  The role of the cobalt coordination environment and reducibility were also examined through in-situ techniques[8].  More recent work focuses on determining the effect of particle size and morphology of ceria supports and shows significant differences in dispersion, reducibility, surface properties and catalytic activity.  Results from our ongoing studies will be presented, including  catalytic activity data and characterization data from in-situ X ray diffraction, in-situ EXAFS, thermogravimetry and calorimetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and temperature programmed techniques, as well as in-situ and operando spectroscopy techniques including laser Raman spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
