The photoelectrochemical effect was discovered by Bequerel in 1839 and later involved the equations of Maxwell, as well as studies by Hertz and Einstein. More contemporary work was performed in the labs of Fujishima and Graetzel. Our own contribution to this field was in the late 1980's to the present and covers both the fields of dye sensitized solar cells as well as the photoelectrochemical manipulation of waste materials and the possibility of controlling reaction pathways to produce products of value. This talk will address the history of the field, our own work in this area and some future ideas.
