The redox-active hexadentate ligand, N-(2,5-dihydroxy-benzyl)-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridinylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine was synthesized and complexed to Mn(II). Upon reaction of the Mn(II) complex with hydrogen peroxide, the quinol portion of the ligand oxidizes to a more weakly coordinating p-benzoquinone functional group. Concomitant with this reaction, the relaxivity of the Mn(II) complex in pH 7.00 water increasesfrom 4.73 mM-1 s-1 to 5.30 mM-1 s-1 (298 K, 3 T field).
