The ability of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to act as ligands in catalytic processes with transition metals is well established. The common method of preparation via midazolium salts does not allow straightforward variation of substituents.1 However, recently a new route exploiting the reaction of metal-isonitrile complexes and an appropriate amine yields the NHCs and related carbenes in a single step.2a By now five distinct types of carbene ligands can be prepared (Scheme 1) with easy variation of the substituents.2?
