Two concise total syntheses of the crucifer wasabi phytoalexin, methyl 1-methoxyindole-3-carboxylate (3 ), which contains an unusual N-methoxyindole core, have been developed with overall yields of 72% and 85%, respectively. One synthesis involved modified Cadogan-Sundberg conditions, which produced the N-methoxyindole 3  natural product from 2 . In another total synthesis, we developed a novel and convenient procedure for producing 3  from an N-hydroxyindole intermediate.
