Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a man-made material with a stacked structure similar to graphite. It is stable at high temperatures, resistant to chemical modification, a thermal conductor and an electrical insulator. Here we report the exfoliation and functionalization of hBN and its use as a filler in polymer nanocomposites. The functionalized hBN can be suspended in water and is shown to contain oxygen functional groups that allow for chemical modification and dispersion of the sheets in polymer composites.
