Thermal deterioration of is a key factor of deactivation for supported Pt catalysts. It is extremely desirable to maintain Pt particles in small sizes for stable catalytic reactivity and high Pt utilization especially under severe oxidizing aging atmospheres. Here, we report a Pt catalyst supported on a unique MgAl2O4 spinel material showing superior thermal and catalytic stability than conventional ones, such as Pt/g-Al2O3. After severe aging at 800�C in air for 1 week (168 h), the aged catalysts retain Pt particle sizes in the range of 1-3 nm, and catalytic activities for methanol oxidation approximately 80% of fresh ones, while a conventional Pt/g-Al2O3 catalyst was severely sintered and nearly inactive. The structure of thermally stable small Pt particles was carefully imaged using HRTEM and was also simulated by DFT calculations. A lattice matching stabilization mechanism is proposed to understand the exceptional thermal stability of Pt on MgAl2O4 spinel.
