To characterize carbon distribution among coarse- and fine-mode aerosol and the vertical and seasonal distribution of aerosol in the lower atmosphere, aerosol samplers were installed at various vertical heights along a 300 m tower in Erie, CO starting in October, 2012. At each selected sampling height, the total mass and elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC) fractions of coarse- (PM10) and fine-mode (PM2.5-10) aerosol are measured and reported.  To investigate the contributions from organic carbon (including humic substances) to the carbonaceous fraction of aerosol, samples collected at three heights will also be analyzed using techniques originating in soil and aqueous organic chemistry: dissolved organic matter, fluorescence and UV/Vis light absorbance analyses will be conducted, as well as additional analyses for a subset of the samples.  Results obtained from these analyses are presented in a companion abstract (Lee et al., 2012).
