In this paper, novel CdTe@SiO2 quantum dots (QDs) capped by a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were synthesized, combining QDs' highly sensitive fluorescence property with MIP's specific molecular recognition. The water-soluble MIPs-capped QDs were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, TEM and IR. The MIPs-capped CdTe@SiO2 QDs showed high photostability, and exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity toward the template molecule (norepinephrine, NE) by QD fluorescence quenching. Under optimal conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity of MIPs-capped CdTe@SiO2 QDs decreased with increasing NE by a Stern-Volmer-type equation in the concentration range of 0.08-200 �mol�L-1, and the fluorescence quenching equation was y=1.033+0.0063x with an excellent correlation coefficient of 0.995. The developed sensor based on MIPs-capped CdTe@SiO2 QDs was successfully applied to determine NE in the plasma of rats.
