Nanoconstructs consisting of a biocompatible layer over a core of Prussian blue containing gadolinium (III) have been prepared and characterized. Using avidin-biotin affinity, the nanoconstructs are directly modified with the antibody Eotaxin-3 and the specific interaction of the nanoconstruct with targeted cells (human eosinophilic leukemia) is demonstrated. MRI data on cells and tissues confirm that the nanoconstruct generates sufficient MRI contrast to be used for molecular imaging of gastro-intestinal diseases such as eosinophilic esophagitis.
