Novel light-concentrating nanomaterials utilizing the plasmon mechanism of gold nanoparticles to efficiently transfer absorbed optical energy to a semiconductor quantum dot are developed. In order to share the absorbed energy of plasmonic quantum dots with inorganic fluorophores, the distance between metal nanocrystals and light source must to be small to allow energy transfer and, simultaneously, the two particles need to be electronically insulated from one another to prevent charge transfer. To this end, plasmonic nanoparticles (gold) and semiconductor nanoparticles will be incorporated in Semiconductor matrix encapulated nanocrystal arrays (SMENA). The distance between nanoparticles will be controlled utilizing a method recently developed in our group, and electrical insulation will be achieved by the use of non-epitaxial matrix-nanocrystal associations. The methodology will involve solution processing of colloidal nanoparticles resulting in the development of durable, all-inorganic, device compatible light-emitting films. The effect of plasmons on the absorption characteristics of the nanocrystal film are explored using the same architecture.
