Direct oxidation of alcohols enables access to carbonyl compounds, such as ketones and aldehydes, which may undergo further follow-up reactivity to afford coupling products. High selectivity for alcohol oxidation can be challenging due to the risk of over-oxidation or the production of unwanted products, but may be accomplished by dehydrogenation catalysis that proceeds with loss of H2. We have been investigating new NNN-Ru(II) complexes that function as efficient dehydrogenation catalysts. This presentation will describe efforts toward the dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols, with liberation of dihydrogen under mild, neutral conditions to afford esters and ketones, respectively. Detailed mechanistic studies will be presented by analysis of kinetic rate data, including isotope effects.
