The interactions between nitric oxide (NO) and metalloporphyrins are of great interest because most of the crucial roles that NO play in biological systems involve the binding of NO to metalloenzymes. The structural characterization of nitrosyl metalloporphyrin complexes is thus essential for the study of the effect that NO has on metalloporphyin units. We report a rare solid-gas reaction to generate an unstable nitrosyl porphyrin complex. The product [(TPP)Fe(NO)(H2O)]OTf was obtained by exposure the crystals of its five-coordinate precursor [(TPP)Fe(H2O)]OTf with NO. Half of the molecules were nitrosylated at iron centers in the crystal lattice to generate a mixure of [(TPP)Fe(NO)(H2O)]OTf and [(TPP)Fe(H2O)]OTf. Binding of NO results in dramatic movements of molecules in the solid crystals. This work was supported by a grant from the NSF.
