The talk will describe the development of fluorinated methionine analogs as chemical probes to study biochemical systems. The biophysical 19F NMR aspects of these probes, their enzymatic processing, and their potential utility in the control of metalloenzyme activity will be discussed. The subtle molecular interactions of these analogs with several enzymes involved in the methionine pathway will also be described utilizing X-ray crystallography results.   The topic will explore the incorporation of these fluorinated amino acids into proteins and how this approach can lead to an improved understanding of the subtle molecular interactions that occur in protein structure and function and substrate processing. In addition, mechanistic studies on the cellular processing of fluorinated methionines in various human parasites will be presented.
