Various multinuclear metal complexes in nature actually serve as efficient molecular catalysts for driving important multi-electron redox transformations such as oxygen evolution from water and nitrogen fixation. Indeed, it is extremely difficult to control rapid decomposition and self -repairing processes achieved in nature. To achieve the robustness of artificial molecular catalysts, scientists rather utilize relatively inert transition metal ions in expense of losing lability required for fast catalytic cycles. This presentation mainly focuses on our on-going project concerning the molecular catalysis of platinum(II) complexes in water reduction to molecular hydrogen. When we first discovered the highly active character of these systems, scientists were skeptical with contribution of colloidal platinum catalysts that might be generated during the catalysis. The talk will show how the details of molecular catalysis based on platinum(II) systems have been settled down, together with those of oxygen-evolving molecular catalysts with other transition metal ions.
