The development of multidentate chelating ligands for lanthanide (Ln) ion complexation remains an active area of research in efforts to fully exploit the unique magnetic and photophysical properties of these metals. For example, complexes of several of the Ln's find application in the areas of medical imaging or bioassay work. Our group is exploring ligands possessing combinations of Schiff base and pyridine binding groups with the goal of developing improved medical diagnostic agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This presentation will highlight the synthesis and characterization of several Ln(III) complexes, including the relaxometric properties of a Gd(III) derivative. In addition, the luminescence properties of a Eu(III) analog will be discussed as they relate to the solution coordination chemistry and rationalization of relaxivity data for the Gd(III) complex.
