Alkanes, as the most abundant hydrocarbons, represent an attractive chemical feedstock. However, the inert nature of C-H bonds renders their utilization difficult. Our group is focused on the activation of C-H bonds using late transition metal-imide complexes based upon a pincer ligand motif. The approach we are studying is intended to utilize a non-traditional combination of inner and outer sphere mechanism of activation, namely C-H bond activation via 1,2-addition across the metal-nitrogen multiple bond. We are primarily interested in PXP-type pincer scaffolds, which support iridium imido moieties. Our synthetic approach to the desired metal complexes takes advantage of labile phosphine ligands (i.e. PPh3 or PCy3), which can be easily displaced. In this presentation, we will discuss our preliminary results in this area: the synthesis of the iridium complexes, and our initial catalytic studies.
