Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been used in a variety of catalytic applications as a heterogeneous alternative to conventional discrete molecular catalysts. These materials typically enjoy advantages of increased active surface area as well as the ease of catalyst recovery. To perform complex functions like solar energy conversion, the MOF platform further allows not only the incorporation of more than one functional component, but also a rational arrangement of them into cooperative networks that facilitate appropriate inter-component interactions and augment the desired reaction pathways. We have successfully prepared several novel bimetallic MOFs that incorporate both light-harvesting and catalytically-active sites (see figure below). We will discuss these new structures with an emphasis on the relevant structural and electronic attributes for photocatalytic applications. Figure.
