The catalytic conversion of CO2 into value added products is an important problem due to the potential of this greenhouse gas as a readily available and inexpensive source of carbon in the synthesis of both commodity chemicals and complex organic molecules. One promising target for the catalytic conversion of CO2 is formic acid. Formic acid is used as a preservative and insecticide and as an acid, reductant and carbon source in synthetic chemistry. In this presentation we will discuss the use of Fe and Ir systems for the homogeneous thermal hydrogenation of CO2 into formic acid. In both cases the metal is supported by a ligand which promotes a secondary coordination sphere interaction between bound formate and the ligand. This interaction plays a crucial role during catalysis.
