This work is focused on synthesis, characterization and surface modification of photoluminescent vinyl-terminated silicon nanoparticles in simple and highly-efficient methods. Vinyl-terminated silicon nanoparticles were prepared through a top-down mechanochemical method, high energy ball milling (HEBM), in the presence of silicon wafers and mixtures of monoenes (e.g. 1-hexene, 1-octene) and dienes (e.g. 1, 7-octadiene). Alkenes stabilize silicon nanoparticles by passivating the fresh silicon surfaces created by HEBM, meanwhile extra vinyl groups from dienes provide terminal vinyl groups on the nanoparticle surfaces which are capable of surface modification through thiol-ene click reactions with various thiols. The surface bonding modes, morphology, UV-Vis and fluorescent properties of the silicon nanoparticles were probed. The photoluminescence of the silicon nanoparticles can be enhanced through UV irradiation in inert atmosphere. Functionalized silicon nanoparticles, such as thiol-terminated silicon nanoparticles, can be used to fabricate advanced multi-functional nanostructures.
