Reaction of the ground state methylidyne radical CH (X2P) with furan, 1-methylfuran, and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF, 96amu) were studied at 4 Torr in a slow flow tube reactor using Multiplexed Photoionization Mass Spectrometry coupled to quasi-continuous tunable VUV synchrotron radiation at 298K, 550K, and 700K. A KrF excimer laser was used to photolyse bromoform (CHBr3) at 248 nm to yield CH radicals that reacted with the target molecules. Detection of stable ions at m/z = 80 (C5H4O), 94 (C6H6O) and 108 (C7H8O) were identified in each system as the products of the CH insertion and ring expansion mechanism with subsequent H elimination.
