Combining the ability of frustrated Lewis pairs to activate small molecules with the track record of transition metals in catalysis offers exciting possibilities in new activation and catalytic reactions. This contribution will detail our development of complexes of the general type [(CpR')2M{2-OC6H4(PR)2}][B(C6F5)4] (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) in which a �frustrated� interaction between M and P leads to chemistry which mimics main group systems; for example the activation of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, olefins and the ring-opening of THF.  Crucially, our complexes also show reactivity which is unprecedented in main group systems; for example, cleavage of C-O bonds in non-cyclic ethers, cleavage of C-Cl and C-F bonds, stepwise reduction of CO with hydrogen and catalytic dehydrogenation reactions. New complexes based on other ligand sets and metal fragments, including late transition metal systems, will also be reported.
