Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) lend themselves to selective chemical sensing because of their high surface areas and potential for facile manipulation of pore dimensions and chemical environment. Mass-based detection methods using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are also attractive for chemical sensing, due to low-cost fabrication, high sensitivity, and low power requirements. This presentation will provide an update concerning our efforts to integrate MOF thin films with surface acoustic wave devices, microcantilevers, and quartz crystal microbalances for the purpose of detecting a range of volatile small molecules. Recent results concerning MOF film growth, computational screening, and gas mixture testing will be presented. Comparisons of predicted sensitivities with actual device performance show that interactions among the substrate, MOF coating, and analyte can lead to unexpected response properties. This shows that knowledge of the MOF structure itself is only the departure point for development of practical MOF-based devices.
