A calorimetric analysis was developed for rapid investigation of heterogeneous liquid-liquid reactions. Linear dependence on stirring rate and volume of aqueous layer and no rate enhancement upon addition of acetone, DMSO, and acetonitrile suggests catalysis on water surface. No dependence of maximal reaction rate on pH and rate inhibition by THF are consistent with unbound hydroxyl groups as surface active sites. The effect of several water solutes on water surface activity was investigated. The list of solutes include surfactants, ionic materials, polymers, water soluble organic compounds, and immiscible with water organic solvents.
