TiO2 nanoparticles with high surface hydroxyl group density were successfully synthesized using anatase TiO2 (ST-01) pretreated with alkaline hydrogen peroxide.  The modified TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by DLS, XRD, HR-TEM, FT-IR, and TGA.  The rate constants on the photodegradation of sulforhodamine B as a model compound under visible light by the modified ST-01 and commercial P25 were investigated and compared.  The rate constants increased with increasing amount of P25 and decreased at high dosage due to particle aggregation and light scattering.  In contrast, the rate constants still increased even when modified ST-01 dosage was added to high dosage (1.5g/L to 2.0 g/L).  This may be attributed to the high density of OH group on the modified ST-01 surface.  The results showed that the alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment could not only increase the density of surface hydroxyl groups on the TiO2 surface, but also reduce light scattering phenomenon compared with P25.
