The transient, PNP pincer-supported titanium(IV) alkylidyne activates solvent cyclohexane, leaving a reactive (PNP)TiII species. This titanium(II) complex reduces 2,2'-bipyridine by two electrons, resulting in diagnostic altering of the C-C bond lengths of  the two pyridine moieties. The final product has been fully characterized by 1D and 2D NMR, and x-ray diffraction. Other bipyridines are tested, including 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and 4,4'-bipyridine.
