As an alternative to 'heat and beat' methods for synthesizing inorganic solids, solution chemistry routes that produce colloidal nanoparticles offer several attractive features, including the formation of solids at lower temperatures and through different reaction pathways.  This, coupled with the inherent size and surface energy effects of nanoparticles, can sometimes lead to the discovery of new solid-state materials or to the synthesis of phases that are not the most thermodynamically stable in a particular bulk system.  Accordingly, this talk will focus on the use of colloidal nanoparticle synthetic routes as an alternative platform for the synthesis of inorganic solids, in addition to the properties and applications of such materials.  The synthesis and discovery of new alloys, intermetallic compounds, and metal chalcogenides will be highlighted, along with insights into how chemical transformation reactions of nanoparticles may be used to predictably target specific structures and compounds that are not accessible in bulk systems.
