LnII-containing cryptates have potential applications as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging, in luminescent materials, as reducing agents, as catalysts, and as oxygen sensors. However, reports of the influence of the structural features of cryptand-type ligands on the physicochemical properties of LnII-containing cryptates are limited, making rational improvements to these complexes challenging. We hypothesized that changing ligand structural features and studying the coordination chemistry across the lanthanide series with different cryptands would enable a systematic study of structure-function relationships. To test our hypothesis, we are synthesizing amine-containing cryptand complexes that contain different functional groups as well as different coordinating atoms. Redox properties, luminescence properties, and contrast-agent-relevant properties (kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities, relaxivities, and water-exchange rates) are being measured for the resulting LnII-containing cryptates. Here, we present the synthesis of functionalized cryptands and the physicochemical properties of the cryptates resulting from metalation with LnII ions. Ultimately, we expect that this study will advance our ability to explain the influence of structural changes in ligands on the physicochemical properties of LnII-containing complexes and have an impact on many important fields.
