In 2003 Pfizer closed research in Kalamazoo, MI. As a result, the decision to stay in Kalamazoo and become an entrepreneur or stay in the comfort of large pharma management presented itself. I chose the former and co-founded a chemistry contract research organization (CRO) with three simple goals: 1) real medicinal chemistry talent; 2) problem solving; and 3) excellence in communication. This talk will provide a brief overview of the fear, the reward and the 'aligning of the stars' in 2003, and the challenges of the last ten years as CEO of Kalexsyn.
