Some transition-metal (Cr, Co) hydrides are effecctive at generating radicals by transferring H� to the b carbons of a-substituted acrylate esters. It is thus possible to catalyze radical cyclizations under H2.Yields are higher if the carbon at the end of the chain bears only a single phenyl substituent rather than two, apparently because the single phenyl case can more effectively achieve coplanarity with (and thus stabilize) the radical that results from cyclization.In some cases where the terminal olefin bears a methyl substituent it is possible to achieve radical cyclizations without the consumption of H2, i.e., cycloisomerizations.
