Dion-Jacobson layered perovskites can be readily manipulated topochemically by both ion exchange and intercalation.  Currently, a series of mixed-metal double-layered oxides, AA'B2O7 (A = alkali metal; A' = rare earth; B = Nb or Ta), are being studied where single and multistep topochemical reactions can be carried out to build new metal-nonmetal layers within these hosts.  Details on the synthesis of these new phases will be presented along with variations in reactivities and structures as a function of A, A' and B. Rietveld and magnetic characterization will also be presented for select compounds.
