Graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted great attention as electrode materials in energyrelated devices on which promising results have been demonstrated. Understanding the structure-property relationship of these materials is therefore of importance for their practical applications. However, the preparation of graphenes with well-defined structures and their controllable assembly into bulk materials are still big challenges. Chemical approach starting from carbon-rich precursors with well-defined structures is an effective strategy towards well-defined graphene based nanomaterials. Unique carbonaceous structures can thus be obtained through this approach. In addition, chemical approaches afford efficient ways towards controllable assembly of graphene units into well-defined three dimensional materials. Besides their unconventional structures, the as-prepared nanomaterials perform interesting properties in various applications, especially in energy storage devices such as lithium ion secondary batteries and supercapacitors.
