Huntsman Advanced Materials is a leading supplier of matrix resin systems for aerospace and industrial composites. We have active research programs in the area of benzoxazine resin development. This paper presents the latest achievements by our team in the benzoxazine resin development. Although benzoxazine resins offer a series of unique thermal, physical and mechanical performance advantages compared to more traditional high performance epoxy resins, one shortcoming that limits their potential wide usage in composite area is their brittle nature. To overcome these challenges, three novel types of tougheners have been developed which exhibit excellent compatibility with the benzoxazine resins. Incorporation of these toughening agents, results in benzoxazine resin systems with high modulus, high Tg, and good toughness. These systems can be processed by traditional prepreg technology as well as liquid resin processing technology such as RTM, VRTM, etc.
