A new series of amphiphilic heteroleptic ruthenium(II) sensitizers with a fluorous bis-ponytailed bipyridine ancillary ligand, Ru(H2dcbpy)(4,4'-bis(RfCH2OCH2)-2,2'-bpy)(NCS)2] [where Rf = HCF2 (NL2), CF3 (NL3), HCF2CF2 (NL4), C2F5 (NL5), C3F7 (NL7) and HCF2CF2CF2CF2 (NL8)], have been synthesized and fully characterized by UV/Vis, visible emission, NMR, MS-FAB and cyclic voltammetric studies. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) based on these dyes exhibit efficiencies either better than or comparable with that of the standard cell based on N719. The conversion efficiency of most of NL-based DSSC is ~10% higher than that of Z907 with a non-fluorous bis-ponytailed bipyridine ancillary ligand. Firstly, the fluorous chains from these fluorous dyes were found to form the hydrophobic layers to prevent the excited electrons from recombining with the electrolyte. Secondly, the adsorbed fluorous dyes change the density of state of TiO2 will be addressed. In summary, these NL dyes show the better light soaking strength and thermal stability than N719 or Z907.
