Are you interested in teaching in a new and exciting way that not only engages students, but promotes a deeper, more meaningful learning experience? The purpose of this workshop is to provide middle and secondary science teachers with an innovative method of instruction that will allow students to actively learn through hands-on investigation and inquiry. The 5E Model of Instruction includes five components that allow students to become active participants in their own learning. These components include e  ngagement, e  xploration, e  xplanation, e  laboration, and e valuation. Teachers of all grade-levels and content areas will find the 5E model to be useful and advantageous for the growth and development of their students.This workshop will show teachers how to take a concept that does not easily lend itself to in-depth investigation and mold it into an inquiry-based learning activity. In the 5E lesson presented in this workshop, we will look at the unit measurement of the mole. In many classrooms, a concept like the mole is explained, memorized, and regurgitated. Students never receive the opportunity to experience the concept personally, and thus never develop a true conceptual understanding. Using the 5E Model of Instruction, teachers will learn how to take a lecture-based concept like the mole and turn it into an inquiry-driven lesson. A lesson on the mole is converted from a repetitive, mechanical task into a fun, exciting, and memorable experience for both the teacher and the students.
