Method of Inactivating Enveloped Viruses using Eco-Friendly, Cost Effective, Zwitteronic Detergents Classical solvent/detergent (SD) viral inactivation methods that use an organic solvent such as tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) and non-ionic detergents such as Polysorbate 80 or TRITON� X-100  or  TRITON� X-100  alone have been shown to be effective inactivating enveloped viruses. These detergents may pose economic and wastewater concerns in some countries because of the ecotoxic nature of the detergent or cost of the detergent. Alternative zwitterionic detergents that are cost effective and  known to be, non-denaturing when solubilizing proteins from cell membranes were evaluated for their ability to inactivate enveloped viruses. Several zwitterionic detergents were successfully identified that were able to inactivate = 4 logs of X-MuLV and PRV within 1 hour.
