The nano binary complexes of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and terbium ion (Tb3+) were prepared by the coordination of Tb to CMC at pH range of 7-12 in 70? waterbath in 60 minutes. Then half of the products were removed NaCl by 80% ethanol solution treated several times. FTIR spectra showed that the Tb ions in the complexes were coordinated with the ligand CMC and the results from SEM indicated particle sizes of CMC/Tb were around 100 nm. UV spectra indicated that the main absorption was from the ligand CMC in the complexes. Both of CMC/Tb nanocomposites with NaCl and without NaCl exhibited very strong fluorescence emission at around 545 nm, which were peculiar emission of Tb ions. However, the fluorescence intensities of nanocomposites with NaCl were stronger than that of the nanocomposites without NaCl during almost all of pHs. The reason might be that crystal structure of NaCl was favorite for energy transmission between CMC and Tb ion.
