Environmental threats comprise significant national and global public health challenges. It is vital to understand the consequences of exposure to environmental agents on human health and the relationship between exposure and disease outcome. Identifying chemical contaminants; assessing properties that affect transport and bioavailability of contaminants; and determining the pathways that result in exposures to human populations are necessary elements for developing informed preventive strategies. This presentation will discuss the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program (SRP), how it advances its mission to reduce the public health burden of hazardous substances through interdisciplinary research.  Critical to this mission is the interplay between the biomedical sciences and the engineering sciences, whereby the observed human health effects of hazardous substances can be prevented by the technologies developed for remediation. All in efforts to reduce environmental exposures to improve public health.
