Oxygen storage materials (OSMs) that can reversibly uptake and release oxygen at elevated temperature or changeable oxygen partial pressure have potential applications in numerous oxygen-related energy and environmental fields, such as three-way catalysts for the removal of automobile exhaust, the production of synthesis gas (H2, CO) from partially reforming methane and improvement in chemical looping combustion of methane for energy production.As a crucial transition metal element with variable oxidation states, manganese oxides (MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4, or MnO), especially MnO2, have been widely studied in catalysis for oxidation reactions because of its excellent catalytic activity, high oxygen storage capacity in the crystalline lattice, abundant amount, relatively low price and environmental friendliness. However, the catalytic activity of MnO2 is still not high enough, which limits its practical application in methane oxidation at low temperature. Owing to the unique redox properties and high oxygen storage capacity between CeO2 and CeO2-x, CeO2 has been widely used as a promoter and an oxidation catalyst. Therefore, CeO2 modified MnO2nanomaterials maybe show enhanced catalytic activity and oxygen storage capacity at low temperature.Herein, we prepared nanocrystalline CeO2 modified �-MnO2 nanorods via a facile room-temperature precipitation method and the lateral heat-treatment at 400 oC 4 h. The effect of synthesis conditions (e.g., Ce(NO3)3�6H2O amount, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)) towards the coating amount and distribution of CeO2 nanocrystals are investigated by means of BET, XRD, HRTEM, FESEM and XPS. Their synergistic effect on the oxygen storage capacity and catalytic application in methane oxidation were investigated. In the CeO2-modified �-MnO2 nanorods, �-MnO2 and CeO2 could mutually benefit by facilitating the oxygen mobility and increasing the oxygen storage capacity at low temperature.
