Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is obtained from fructose making it an appealing source for biorenewable ligands. The desired compounds may be synthesized via Schiff base condensation between HMF and various substituted anilines resulting in a class of [OON] ligands. Transition metal complexes bearing these [OON] type ligands were synthesized from the corresponding isopropoxide metal precursors. The resultant complexes were utilized for the polymerization of caprolactone to polycaprolactone, which is an attractive material due to its biodegradable nature.
