The 5E instructional model, which utilizes engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation, is a powerful and research-based methodology for instruction in the science classroom. Central to the model is the idea that lessons must be engaging. To promote active participation, students are given the task of proving an individual's innocence or guilt in a potential poisoning during a two-day 5E lesson on the differences between ionic and covalent compounds. Students test the properties of several compounds, ionic and covalent, and generalize the results. They must then write a judge's opinion either absolving or convicting the defendant and supporting their decision with evidence from their conclusions in the lab. Students are then asked to differentiate between a quasi-ionic compound and a covalent one which the teacher will demonstrate through a reaction. Their written responses are used to assess and reiterate their conclusions.
