The press release announcing the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry describes organic chemistry as �an art form where scientists produce marvelous chemical creations in their test tubes. Mankind benefits from this in the form of medicines, ever-more precise electronics and advanced technological materials.�  Tremendous opportunities lie ahead for organic chemistry, driven not only by new science within the field, but also by scientific breakthroughs in adjacent areas such as computer science and biology. This lecture will discuss a few emerging areas of organic chemistry that are potential game-changers, include synthetic biology, computer-aided synthesis design, 3-D printed reaction-ware, metal-organic frameworks, large molecule substrates, and organic nanomaterials.
