Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a novel metal-free narrow band gap semiconductor.  The conduction band edge of this material is sufficiently reducing to all for the generation of reactive oxygen species - including the superoxide anion radical - from molecular oxygen.  In this poster, we will present the results of our studies into the ability of this material to reduce the viable population of a number of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, including E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa under visible radiation.  Experimental evidence for the mechanism of antimicrobial activity by g-C3N4 will also be presented.
