The rapidly increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has caused serious concern for the global climate change. Intensive research interests have been paid to the preparation of efficient solid adsorbents for CO2 adsorption, and activated carbons are very competitive due to their tailored microporous structure and relatively low preparation cost. Since commercial activated carbons usually show low CO2 adsorption capacity, more efforts have been spent on developing novel activated carbons with high CO2 adsorption. We prepared a series of pine nut shell and sunflower seed shell�derived activated carbons with high CO2 adsorption of up to 7.7 mmol/g at 273 K and 5.0 mmol/g at 298 K at 1 bar, the highest capacities at ambient pressure among all the biomass-derived porous carbons. Adsorption temperature plays an important role in CO2 adsorption on activated carbons, but the accurate micropore ranges responsible for CO2 adsorption at different temperature have not been clearly revealed. The sensitivity of CO2 adsorption to adsorption temperature was studied in this study. The narrow micropore distribution of the activated carbons greatly affected the CO2 adsorption at different adsorption temperatures. The activated carbons with more large micropores suffered the greater loss of their CO2 adsorbed amounts at elevated adsorption temperatures. The micropore ranges responsible for CO2 adsorption at 1 bar narrowed from 0.33�0.82 nm to 0.33�0.52 nm when the adsorption temperature increased from 273 K to 348 K. Under the typical flue gas conditions at 0.15 bar and 348 K, the range of narrow micropores responsible for CO2 adsorption decreased to 0.33�0.40 nm. This research not only provides a way for the preparation of highly efficient activated carbons for CO2 capture, but also guides the selection of suitable activated carbons for CO2 adsorption under different conditions.
